Gainesville, Florida (1997 – present)

Against Me! is a band originally from Naples, Florida, and later relocated to Gainesville, Florida. They are known for their heavily -influenced sound and energetic live shows (Spin named them one of the 25 greatest live bands in 2006). Their first full-length album, released on No Idea Records in 2002, was the highly-acclaimed Reinventing Axl Rose. In December 2005, they signed to Sire Records, and released their major label debut, New Wave, on July 10, 2007. June 4, 2010 saw the release of their fifth studio album, White Crosses.

Tom Gabel (currently known as Laura Jane Grace) started Against Me! in 1997 as a solo act at the age of 17. She would only occasionally perform with support from drummers and/or bassists. This period in the band was marked by playing guerrilla shows in a college apartment complex laundromat, emphasizing the D.I.Y. sentiments of their work. Gabel self-released one demo tape, officially entitled Against Me!, but more commonly known as Tom’s Demo. While copies of the cassette itself are extremely rare, internet file-sharing programs have helped to circulate the songs amongst fans.

Another demo cassette was released the following year on Misanthrope Records, with a slightly more complete band, titled Vivida Vis. Only five hundred copies of this album were made, but file-sharing once again popularized it. Perhaps the most well-known song on the record, “Shit Stroll” is still routinely requested by the audience at Against Me! shows. The band rarely, if ever, obliges these requests.

I called her "Tom", when she said she was planning to be called Laura in the future... That is clearly not offensive... If you'd check dates, you'd see I posted that before her twitter update saying she was going by the name Laura. @TheOnlyRoc clearly didn't pick up on that.

"may the likes of this song never make one fucking dollar, leave it for a demo tape to be played until it's broken then remembered only for what it was" LOL.

im actually not shocked at all by her decision, ive noticed some gender identity troubles with him for a while, just listen to the lyrics of the song ocean, to give some insight

She's posted on Twitter that she is going by Laura now. (https://twitter.com/tommygabel/status/205400149613215744) She's been on hormones for weeks and identifies as female. It's expected that people will be confused for a while. Many transgender people never get surgery, by the way, but that doesn't mean they're not trans.

hiyalosars, saying "he" about her is offensive

All he said was that he hasn't undergone surgery yet. There is nothing offensive about that..

I like girls with boy names but I read why she chose Laura and that was nice. What does the surgery have to do with anything? Gregorymichael clearly doesn't understand how this sort of thing works.

Laura has people call her Tommy to make it easier for everyone to adapt to the change. However, I'm sure she prefers female pronouns at this point and we should respect that.
