Biography

Budapest, Hungary (1986 – present)

Progressive rock band formed in Budapest, Hungary in 1986.

The oeuvre of After Crying stands unparalleled in Hungarian music palette, and is also rare in international comparison.

The aim of this creative community has ever been to compose contemporary, up-to-date classical music that is possible to understand for many people – since it uses elements of today’s everyday musical idiom; and at the same time is able to convey deep meaning at a high artistic level, dealing with serious issues of our time.

A kind of “up-to-date classical music” that addresses both its own contemporaries and eternity at the same time. On the stage, their regular instrumentarium ranges from classic-acoustic instruments (cello, trumpet, piano, flute) to the standard setup of a modern rock band. From time to time they play shows with a chamber or symphony orchestra. On their studio-albums countless variations of classical and modern compositional methods and instrumentation appear, from acoustic chamber lineup to 21st century symphonic and electronic sounds.

All these are mounted in an organic dramaturgy, where the pieces ranging from song-format to long instrumental compositions all find their appropriate content. While heavily influenced by Emerson, Lake and Palmer or King Crimson, they added a number of unique elements to their sound. Keyboard player Vedres Csaba was the primary composer during his tenure with the band, though others took up the slack without a significant change in style. After leaving, Csaba formed Townscream.

to Bortkastad: I agree that male vocals on this album aren't good, mainly the english pronunciation :-). I recommand you to compare them with vocals on other later albums with hungarian lyrics, beside this...I think they are really great.

My opinion is the double CD live album "Struggle For Life" is what I recommend to everyone to introduce them to the band. Amazing stuff, including their cover of "Starless".
