Well there are certainly some subjects I dont care for, so yeah some subjects mean more to me than others which leads me to like those songs more than another one with another subject that I cant identify myself with. Its like that with 9-5ers anthem, I like the song, but the situation is quite different here in europe (even though alot in the song does apply for europe too), so it doesnt really speak to me which is why I dont like it as much as other songs.

but do you listen to a doesone song on whatever subject and say "this song is better than that other song because it is about xxxx and the other song is about yyyyyy."?

Complexity (to me) is something that is not easily taken apart. Try Doseone for an example.

What is a " complex subject?" do you listen to rappers that teach you physics in their lyrics or something?

    Wednesday evening
  • BBacid

I didnt say a subject has to be complex to be good, a strong message can do wonders. You can do big things with basically every subject in the world, but most can't. Aesop can.

  • ChinaBuffet

the subject in no regrets is basically just him telling people to do what they want in their lives. there's a big range of things you could do with that, but there's also a big range of things you could do with a song about buying jewelry..

I think lyrics do get more complex (or simple) if the subject is something that is hard (or easy) to grasp. Aesop's subjects are often about mundane things which he deliveres in an abstract way with well thought out metaphors for example. His subject matter is not all that complex and hard to understand really, he is not doseone (doesnt make him a worse rapper though). I like all those tracks you listed, but 'No Regrets' subject is unbeatable to me.

but the subject matter doesn't make the lyrics simple or complex either. that's like saying a song in one key is always better or more complex than one in another. and how often does aesop rock even rap about anything that different from another rappers? yes i know, holy smokes, 9 5ers anthem, one of four..but even those subjects aren't out of the each of a lot of (non alternative) rappers.

I didnt write that subject matter determines the quality of the lyrics, but with Aesop its one big factor, some other artists have less of it and focus more on something else. Its subjective really, some might like it if the lyrcs are more straightforward. I agree that sound is important but I can sometimes neglect bad production if the lyrics are well thought out.

Here you will find 1 epic artist, a load of fanboys having a war, and a few people telling them to quiet down and listen to the music.

And when have I ever "trolled" other than when I was on the Lil' Wayne shoutbox when everyone was arguing over what was "real hip-hop" and getting mad at the ones who didn't like his music? That's a different issue, though.

Okay. I 've liked ASAP for a while, so it doesn't make me a bandwagoner.

@bbacid god damn do I have to get into this again....the subject of a song does not determine the quality of the lyrics ... It has An effect, but it doesn't point the quality one way or another.. The figurative language ,word usage, and use of whatever concept determine how good the lyrics are.. Even after the fact that this IS music, so the sound is pretty important

Aesop and Rocky both make good music, but to even try to compare both people is one of the most pointless comparisons ever. The only reason why they're ever in the same sentence is because their names are similar. It's almost like Odd Future nerds posting on Madvillainy pages and MF DOOM pages because Tyler used the same sample on Odd Toddlers as One Beer, or because Earl freestyled on ALL CAPs. Ultimately, no one cares.

Also ChinaBuffet in the comment you deleted you said we should stop dividing hip hop. But I honestly dont want people to generalize hip hop (its really easy to do that). And I? would be the reason people think Aesop got a pretentious "hipster" fanbase? Actually you're the hipster if you listen to recent lil wayne's and drake's stuff while listening to Aesop not because of the subject matter. I mean even though Aesops music generally sounds good (some might think differently) its poetry and subject matter is part of poetry. If you're only listening to Aesop because it sounds good to your ears then you're missing out. But to each their own I guess.

V Why are you everywhere, trying to be funny or interesting? Trolling is fun for a while but come the fuck on - it's all you do and you always end up explaining how you are not a troll and etc.....If you just don't like Aesop you wouldn't be here complaining about his pretentious fanbase or things like this. It's bcs the whole Aesop vs ASAP thing is trendy right now and you are just another bandwagoner lookig for attention.

  • BarneyJWY

I..uh...wasn't trying to. That's probably why it seemed weak, because I'm not a troll.
