Cerebral Palsy

In the summer of 1977 after being born two and a half months premature, to a fourteen year old girl struggling with her own addictions in Northern Alberta, Canada weighing in at two pounds and two ounces, I was born with Cerebral Palsy. I died three times at birth due to being deprived of oxygen from a twenty four hour labor and birth. I also had open heart surgery to fix a hole on my heart. I walk differently than most people and having been made fun of when I was younger was hard. Thinking that everyone was against me and that I wasn’t worthy of friends, I didn’t realize that I was any different from others because I was born this way.

I have had over five major surgeries on my legs to help with my mobility during my growing up years. I remember as a young child spending lots of recovery time at the Vancouver Children’s Hospital. I am so thankful for such wonderful surgeons and nurses who worked there. After those surgeries I was able to walk without any leg braces or walking aids, to which I am so grateful.

I was given up for adoption at birth. I lived in the hospital ward for the first year after being born living in an incubator. The doctor’s diagnosis was that I wouldn’t walk or even be able to live a fully independent life.
