When most kids his age were out playing in the neighborhood, 14-year-old Adam Rubenstein was mastering the guitar, writing songs, and laying the groundwork for the Midwestern hardcore explosion that would detonate in the years to come. The guitarist and primary songwriter for Indianapolis’ Split Lip, Rubenstein and his bandmates toured the country on long weekends in high school, releasing a classic single and two acclaimed, emotionally resonant albums for indie juggernaut Doghouse Records from 1991 to 1995.

As he matured, so did his music, signaling a name change to Chamberlain and an embrace of the roots-tinged rock’ n’roll of his Midwestern predecessors. After a third studio album in 1998 and steady touring in its wake, it was time for yet another change. He was overflowing with ideas but unaccustomed to fronting his own project. Hitting the studio and adopting the name Adam Dove, he took the plunge and came away with recordings that reveal an uncommon blend of songwriting craft, superb musicianship, and lyrical depth.

The hook-laden title track draws strength from the ups-and-downs of daily life, while “Collect Me” reflects on the familial bond and the expectations that come with it. “Your Secret” and “Further In” are spirited rockers that deal directly with matters of the heart. “This Evolution” ruminates on the youthful abandon of Adam’s early days on the road, with a nod to the Chamberlain fan favorite “Racing Cincinnati.”

Now living in New York and immersed in the latest phase of his musical evolution, Adam is undoubtedly writing songs that are more powerful than ever.
