Biography

Abruptum was a Swedish black metal/dark ambient band formed in 1990 by IT and All. Notable for long, gruesome sessions of improvised noise, they would allegedly record during acts of self-mutilation. The band became kind of famous very much thanks to the fact that IT was one of the leaders within what was called the Satanic Black Circle, along with members of bands like Mayhem and Emperor. IT had planned to create the band already in 1987 but it wasn’t until 1990 that he found the right member to do it. The same year they recorded their first two demos. After the release of the first demo they kicked out their bass player Ext. After the release of a 7” EP called simply called “Evil” in 1991 (later re-released by Psychoslaughter) All began to drink heavily and was forced to leave the band. IT then found a new member in Evil from the young band Marduk. As IT left the scene completely after several events within the circle and threats to him and his family Morgan continued the band for a while on his own but the project is probably put on ice for now because of the growing popularity of Marduk.

The current line-up is:
Evil - Drums, Guitars, Piano, Noises (Death Wolf, Marduk, ex-Devils Whorehouse)

Certainly one of the most evil and hellish acts to emerge from Sweden during the 90's..

Abruptum is really just about playing all the wrong notes on out of tune guitars and some vocalist screaming "aaaaahhh..." when the other guy is poking his penis with a needle. [3] Lmao, i read somewhere that this band uses real mental patient screams so i don't think it's not far off into the crazy mix of black metal.

"Could someone tell me honestly, is this band just a huge joke? The self mutilation thing in the description, and the fact that the song of theirs I'm listening to right now sounds like someone belching and farting over some black metal kind of implies that they're a parody of other black metal bands." I hope you know that Abruptum were one of the first bands in the 2nd wave of Black Metal? As far as it's correct to get them tagged as Black Metal. There were just a few Black Metal bands at the time, Abruptum started their shit. So the chance of this band being a parody is small. They inspired even Euronymous himself.

@Raesyricon I endured two albums during my late teens and despite being trve kvlt kid back there I could not agree less with you and your experiences. Despite all bands with more or less well made aesthetic layer, sound layer and philosophy layer this just cracked me. It looked like it was the real thing but frankly I don't want to listen to gay scat sado maso session with music instruments and audio recording involved.

The latest Abruptum album Potestates Apocalypsis is really great and dark, strongly recommended. I def. prefer Abruptums later noise/dark ambient to the earlier releases (which are still very good).
