Yokohama, Tokyo, Japan (1996 – present)

ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION is a popular Japanese group from Yokohama, Japan, formed in 1996. The group consists of Goto Masafumi (vocals, guitar), Kita Kensuke (guitar, vocals), Yamada Takahiro (bass, vocals), and Ijichi Kiyoshi (drums). They’re known for making “Haruka Kanata”, “After Dark”, and “Rewrite” which were used in the anime Naruto, Bleach, and Fullmetal Alchemist, respectively.

■ The four of them came together in the music club of their university in 1996; for Gotoh, Kita, and Yamada, ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION was the first band they ever formed.

After a while, they began to perform at the school and in the local Yokohama area. Interestingly, their first songs were all written in English and, in fact, their first 6 track album (released in 2000) was entirely sung in English. The CDs were sold at concerts and over the internet.

■ In 2001, beginning with “YMD” they held many self-planned events at Yokohama’s CLUB24.

■ Once “Konayuki,” the first song in which they used Japanese lyrics, was completed, they sent copies to all the independent shows on the FM stations, and were consequently able to get their music played for the first time on FM radio.

■ After that, they released their second CD of original works, this time using Japanese lyrics. It achieved great success within the region and at all the Live Houses.
From this time on, starting at Shibuya, Shimokitazawa, Kichijouji and other places, they started putting on shows famed for their energy.

I tried giving Magic Disk a chance but I ended up not liking anything in the whole album >_>. Hopefully they go back to their basics and make another good one like Fan Club. BTW, I like every album they ever produced except for Magic Disk. Fan Club really stood out all of the tracks.

I agree 100% with OcelotDragon. Fanclub > WWW > KT5M > MMAN > Feedback File > Sol-fa > Houkai Amplifier > SBK > Magic Disk. Magic Disk was bland; there was none of the passion that made them great. The guitar parts were static and boring, there was ZERO drum presence, and the any focus was shifted from the band itself to the synthesized instruments or effect which highlighted each song. Fanclub was the exact opposite. The vocals were intense and on-spot, the guitar parts were charged and haunting, the drums were phenominal, the instrumentation was the most advanced they've ever done, and the maturity of the composition was second only to WWW. I'm impressed every time I listen to it.

Fan Club is the best album they ever made. Magic Disk is the worst out of all of them. I hope the next one will redeem what they failed with Magic Disk
