England (1976 – present)

801 were an England progressive rock band that were originally formed in 1976 for three live concerts by Phil Manzanera (guitars), Brian Eno (keyboards, synthesizers, guitar, and vocals), Bill MacCormick (bass and vocals), Francis Monkman (Fender Rhodes piano and clavinet), Simon Phillips (drums and rhythm generator)and Lloyd Watson (slide-guitar and vocals). The last concert was recorded and released as the album “801 Live”. The music consisted of more or less mutated selections from albums by Manzanera, Eno and Quiet Sun, plus a full-scale rearrangement of Lennon-McCartney’s “Tomorrow Never Knows” and an off-the-wall excursion into The Kinks’ 1964 hit “You Really Got Me”.

After the success of the live album, some members, along with numerous guests including Tim Finn and Eddie Rayner of Split Enz and Godley & Creme of 10cc, recorded a studio album called “Listen Now”. In the years following that 1977 release, various other recordings have trickled out, mostly from the original series of live dates.

Had this album on a record I got from Camden Record and Tape Exchange in the early 80s then got the CD a fewy years ago and found it had two extra tracks! Fat Lady of Limburg is a great "new" track. Wonderful stuff!

I discovered this randomly while checking the Eno/Roxy Music/Manzanera rabbit hole. I play it at BBQ's we cater and there's always someone that "has to know what is playing" because they like it.

This was a great album (project) that turned up at the right time. Roxy Music was turning AOR, and we got to hear some of the best session musicians during that era. I will never forget Phil Manazanera"s guitar solo on Third Uncle. Bill MacCormick forms Random Hold, Francis Monkman gave us great solo albums, and what more can be said about Eno's contibutions.

I love the live version of Third Uncle as much as the studio version.. Really, overall, it's one of the finest live recordings and especially since I haven't found too much of Eno live, during his solo career, besides a Peel Session from '74. Either that or I'm not looking hard enough :3

(Dont listen to him, he bought 6 others at the same time, all by cheesy synth-pop bands and metal groups. On the upside, hi did get Ashra, well, kind of upside anyway)
