Cincinnati, OH.

24-Carat Black were a soul group from Cincinnati, OH. Initially they were called The Ditalians, but after befriending arranger Dale Warren from Detroit, they rechristened themselves 24-Carat Black.

With Warren functioning as composer and producer they released only one album, 1973’s, Ghetto: Misfortune’s Wealth (Enterprise/Stax), a concept album dealing with the hardship of life in the inner city.

The members of 24-Carat Black would later turn up in the group Shotgun.

"mother's day" is the most fucking amazing song ever. i originally heard it sampled in "the end credits" by wale, and searched for so long to find out the original song.

I love this album. Of course, I first knew about the group from the long-ago sample from Eric B & Rakim's "In The Ghetto", but listening to the full album it is pure genius. Poor peoples' advocacy will never die.
