2 Skinnee J’s is the name of a musical band, sometimes characterized as nerdcore hip hop or rap metal (although one of their songs is, in fact, entitled “Friends Don’t Let Friends Listen to Rap Metal”). Individuals from in and around the area of Columbia University formed the band. It was founded in February 1991 by a pair of college friends going by stage names Special J and Rabbi J-Slim; the name of the group is derived from the letters in their names and their similar girths. In May 1995 J-Slim left the band (he now works for the Children’s Television Workshop), as did the guitarist, Joey Viturbo. Not long after, most of the horn section disbanded to attend graduate school. There followed a chaotic summer in which J-Slim’s spot was filled by J. Jonah Jamison, but Jamison was replaced in September 1995 with the addition of former accordianist J Guevara. As of 2003, when the group went on hiatus, 2 Skinnee J’s consisted of:

* Special J (MC)
* J Guevara (MC)
* Mikey B (drums)
* Eddie Eyeball (bass guitar)
* Lance Rockworthy (guitar)
* Stevie Spice (trombone, keyboards)
* AJ Stumpy Johnson (manager, beer sipper)

    One of the most creative bands I've ever heard. And the amount of energy they poured into their live shows is unrivaled. I remember the first time I saw them, years and years ago, at the Tune Inn in New Haven, CT. It quite literally rocked my world.

    One of the best live bands I have ever seen. And totally nice guys to boot. It really sucks they had so many issues with their record labels because it kept them from getting the recognition they truly deserved.

    I can only assume Grown Up and Lemon Drop were required by the label in order for the album to come out. Those songs sound very little like other J's songs, and I can easily imagine a label saying something like "we need a few radio friendly hits before we can put this thing out."

    It was shelved because Capricorn records went out of business and wouldn't release the rights to the album. While it was in dispute, the J's themselves put the album up on Napster, in order to satiate us rabid fans. Eventually they somehow got the rights to shop the album around to other labels, and that's when Volcano records put it out.

    anyone know why volumizer was shelved for 2 years? i remember "stockholm love" getting major air play, and its not even on the US retail? the 2 versions were merged as the japanese retail. i've gotten my hands on an actual promo copy of the 2000 version. i actually saw both 2000 and 2002 promos in a store 4 hours away, the chain went out of business, the local store got bought and continued existing, so the stuff from the other stores in the state were moved to our local store, and i refound the 2000 promo and bought it. totally should have bought the 2002 promo when i had the chance.

    theres also an instrumental version of volumizer floating around. only has 10 tracks, the general 9 tracks from both versions, plus grown up.

    Darsa: If you really want to complete the collection, there is also American Heros and 6 Songs for 5 Bucks. They are old cassette demos, and sound pretty raw, but it's cool to hear some old school J's back when they still had J Slim. Also, there are 2 versions of Volumizer. They are more or less the same, but there are a couple of tracks on the original version that are not on the retail one (and vice-versa).
