About this album

© TRAKWERX (2008) Released: 18 Oct 2008 11 tracks (64:46)
17 Pygmies latest effort, Celestina is a concept album (remember that term?) about a doomed space flight by a bunch of astronauts getting high on pure oxygen while exploring a giant gas nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia. Really. Thematically, Celestina is loosely based upon the classic 15th century Latin novel La Celestina, a timeless tale of love and betrayal. Celestina is also a musical tribute to all of the unique 1950-60’s era science fiction motion pictures (think The Day The Earth Stood Still) and clearly reflects Jackson Del Rey’s recent obsession with late night Twilight Zone repeats.

Drawing from influences as diverse as A Saucerful of Secrets era Pink Floyd, Space Oddity era David Bowie, This Mortal Coil as well as film composers Jerry Goldsmith and Bernard Herrmann, Celestina seamlessly welds classical film scores and 60’s era psychedelia with 4AD style vocals to create a simultaneously beautiful and haunting universe of musical splendor. It would not be out of the question for fans to compare Celestina as a continuation of the 17 Pygmies signature sound that was first explored and presented on their classic 1984 release Jedda by the Sea.

Having re-asserted themselves as one of the leading bands on the cutting edge of pop musical exploration, Celestina should have no problem appealing to the Godspeed You! Black Emperor audience and is a natural with college audiences and the iPod generation alike. In short, 17 Pygmies poses the timeless musical question to their newfound audience, Can you hear me, Major Tom? We think the answer is yes.
