  • The Delightful 65 of the 60's! (Best Albums 1960-1969)

1 The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico
    (1967)
One would be hard pressed to name a rock album whose influence has been as broad and pervasive as The Velvet Underground and Nico. While it reportedly took over a decade for the album's sales to crack six figures, glam, punk, new wave, goth, noise, and nearly every other left-of-center rock movement owes an audible debt to this set. While The Velvet Underground had as distinctive a sound as any band, what's most surprising about this album is its diversity. Here, the Velvets dipped their toes into dreamy pop ("Sunday Morning"), tough garage rock ("Waiting For The Man"), stripped-down R&B ("There She Goes Again"), and understated love songs ("I'll Be Your Mirror") when they weren't busy creating sounds without pop precedent. …

  • Top 30 Debut Albums: Another go at it

    13 Feb 2010, 02:23 by Zeppledelin

Perhaps not intentional, but Jimbobbins' late comment on my age-old list of debut albums made me realize how long it has been since my last journal post. Thanks for the much-needed inspiration. So, here’s another go at it, not only because I felt the old list needed an update, but also since I still have an affinity toward the unadulterated sincerity of debut albums. Let’s do a top 30 this time, shall we?

    30. Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
The old school has a tendency to grow tedious; their innovations not so apparent anymore, but at least some of them retain their awesomeness. In this case it is possibly a matter of never being revolutionary, rather rock solid, wrapping together the best parts of their gangsta roots and adding a pleasant, if not entirely dead serious Eastern mysticism to the mix. And they did have humor, an incredible flow, personality and coolness, and the Wu-Tang definitely weren’t nothing to fuck with.

  • Top Five Tracks V.18 (+ 3/14/09 Modest Mouse set list)

    21 Mar 2009, 23:46 by lemursgomoogle

To be honest, I'm really pulling this week's Top Five straight out of my ass. I've spent my entire week either moving or getting physically and mentally ready to move after my roommate and I decided to go our separate ways. However, I have just the number of tracks in my head to whip together this little post... lucky me.

    1)Comfort Eagle - CAKE
    2)Lua - Bright Eyes
3)Long Distance Drunk - Modest Mouse
4)You're Gonna Miss Me - 13th Floor Elevators
5)The Sound of Settling - Death Cab for Cutie

Plus, after a long day of hauling all my belongings across campus yesterday, I treated myself to a little ticket to see Beirut on April 19th at the Electric Factory, which takes places a mere four days after we trek up to the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby to see Death Cab for Cutie! What a week that'll be. Also, along those same lines: the Modest Mouse show at the Electric Factory this past Saturday was phenomenal. The set they played was great, and Isaac Brock never fails to entertain in his fucked up way. …

  • [72] The 13th Floor Elevators - The Psychedelic Sounds Of The 13th Floor Elevators…

    29 Dec 2008, 21:19 by Llorenza

The 13th Floor Elevators - The Psychedelic Sounds Of The 13th Floor Elevators

I have no idea what to write about this album. It's psychedelic, yay! One of the first psychedelic rock albums, and probably the first that said it so implicitly in its title. I believe that when you were young in the sixties / seventies, this music must have been quite something, but nowadays it doesn't surprise that much anymore. A slight overdose of psychedelic sounds, I presume. Nowadays, it must be mixed with eastern sounds, african rhythms or heavy electronic beats to be noticed. Times change.

I have nothing against psychedelic music, in contrary, most of the time I like it, but it has a well known recipe. The music should have a very "open" sound (can't translate my Dutch "weids", I'm sorry), there must be some strange instruments, and the singer should have a particular voice (best example: Grace Slick from Jefferson Airplane). …
