Jaime and Jose began the BélMez project back in 2004, while they were working on their other band 12Twelve. Marc, member of Dolores and Teresa, joined them in 2005 completing the final trio, brought together by their love of American rooted slowcore.

In August 2007 Bélmez recorded with Paco Loco on analog tape and 100% live their first album, Apariciones, mastered by Bob Weston (Shellac) in Chicago, released by Acuarela. A combination of powerful yet minimalistic sound, with no effects, but in which every note and every bang is fundamental.

Ayer fuí al concierto de 12Twelve en Molins de Rei.

Lo primero destacar la dificultad de dar con el lugar dónde se realizaba. Yo soy de Barcelona, no conozco Molins de Rei y lo de Sala Gótica o Pati de Palau no sale en las guías habituales. Tuve que recurrir al ayuntamiento para tener una indicación de dónde se daba el concierto.

Llegué demasiado puntual, de hecho no se abrieron las puertas hasta las 22.15, y el concierto empezó a menos cuarto y duró algo menos de 1h30'.

El concierto tuvo dos partes, en la primera tocaron temas viejos de sus discos publicados, en la segunda adelantaron material nuevo, con un estilo algo más rock, algo más rápido y con un pelín menos de jazz.

A nivel de sonido, quizás la diferencia más remarcable con los temas nuevos es que emplean un bajo en vez de un contrabajo. También me llamó la atención en una canción el uso del teclado de una forma mucho más melódica de lo habitual.

He de confesar que prefiero los temas con contrabajo porque me gusta mucho el sonido jazz que les confiere…

Corría el año 1997, cuando una noche me puede quedar a ver la tele hasta tarde en casa de mis abuelos.

Era algo infrecuente, así que esperaba cosas muy desagradables: violencia extrema, terror gore, porno duro... Bueno eso no era desagradable, pero en aquella época no existían las teles locales y bueno... no teníamos el plus.

Y nada, resulta que me aparece en la pantalla una niña a lo chicos del maíz. Yo no sabía que programa era el que daban, pero tenía una voz muy rara y la música era... definitivamente debía estar viendo algún tipo de peli de terror bizarra.

Y pasé mucho miedo a la espera de que apareciera por detrás del escenario un loco con máscara de hoquei para destripar salvajemente a la niña, que por otra parte era bastante repelente.

Por suerte, resulto que estaba viendo Sputnik (un programa de videoclips del canal autonómico).

Y así descubrí a Portishead. He de decir que me traumatizó bastante. …

Last year or so was really insane in my life, everything changed in a speed of light and that changes were not so good that I expected. To be honest I didn't want to change anything at all. So, in this in year I've noticed that I've become more clown-ish, sort of, maybe It's because of huge stress at my work and not really successful private life for this "carrier building" year. But that''s not a main point of this entry.

I want to tell you how my taste changed during this year. for a decade or so I'm huge metal and progressive rock fan, I always loved bands like Tool, Meshuggah, King Crimson, etc. But, I've noticed that I began to listen more light, a little bit pop-ish, bands like Dredg, 30 Seconds to Mars, Circa Survive and so on. I do not say they are bad, they really are great and astonishing bands to listen, but they are different, a lot different to music I loved (actually I do still love 'em).

So, I just want to say that, in my opinion…

Leo en el blog de Michel Cloup de Experience que en diciembre entrarán a los estudios de Steve Albini (sí el de Big Black y Shellac) en Chicago para grabar su nuevo disco. Parece ser que uno de los miembros del grupo lo deja por otros proyectos. El nuevo disco saldrá en el segundo trimestre de 2008 e irá precedido de un single en febrero.

La combinación de Mr Albini con los chicos de EXP puede ser demoledora, hay que recordar que por las manos de el de Chicago han pasado maravillas como el Rid Of Me, Surfer Rosa, o In Utero, y los discos de 12Twelve también le deben mucho. Después de publicar un disco tan sobrecogedor como Hémisphère Gauchemis esperanzas en el futuro de una música radical, expresiva, moderna y política están sobre estos chicos de Toulouse.

Animo, que ya falta menos.

Well, it is the 29th now so its probably the right time to be doing this, but there are still some to listen to properly (and that haven't quite got here in time) that haven't made the list for that reason. It was a great year overall though, too many great releases flying in from all over the shop. Its too tricky to decide between some (and too much effort), so what I've decided to do is a top 25 and then chuck in sections of good, average, bad, to make it easier. Some will probably get highlighted though. Included will be some splits and EPs, but I've tried to avoid singles (although there are a couple in the list that really needed to be mentioned). In my opinion the releases aren't poor quality (overall - might have a couple of good tracks on them) until after the Plague Songs compilation.

So yeah, best of '06...
