As the Norfolk Tractor Beam pulls him north from Brentwood, near London through to Witham and then Stowmarket, Suffolk, -ism- has sporadically been making music for over 15 years. Work, he says, gets in the way.
The name should be pronounced "Hyphenism Dash" when feeling pretentious and just plain "ism" at all other times.
With -ism- tracks covering a wide variety of styles, you may find that you disagree with the similar artists, but you should find a track which suits if you dig through the playlist.
The first piece recorded under the name -ism- was used by a UK cable channel for their “Sport at 9” theme. This track only exists on a handful of betamax tapes, due to a much-regretted decision to sell some hardware while short of funds.
Another 2 hours worth of material was lost in this sale. If anyone has ever bought a Roland MC-505 with track names including “Phynosand” and “Sport@9”, you were the bearer of this material.
The next set of –ism- tracks were recorded over a very psychedelic Christmas break while studying Music Technology. The masters of these tracks are believed to be lost due to computer crashes, though a number of CDs exist (-ism- would appreciate anyone with a copy uploading and sending to him).
These tracks from 2003, are dark, sombre, twisted pieces made for long chemical journeys, and are collated on Demo EP 1.
“Aquaqua” is the first track from this period, recorded a few months earlier than the rest, though the version of Aquaqua available here on Demo CD V2.0 is a lo-fi redux of a much cleaner earlier version, yet to be rediscovered.
Combining videogame sound-chip emulation and feedback-based noise, the works from this currently unavailable EP sit somewhere in between what became known as “chiptune” and musique concrete and are designed to create an uneasy yet rollercoaster-like atmosphere in any environment.
It is claimed by some that the pieces are haunted and invoke arcane magic.
They will be released for free as soon as they are found.
Lighter and almost 100% less haunted, the music available here results from occasional hours, less occasional days and infrequent weeks of tinkering,
-ism- will be releasing new material in 2009.
As suggested by the preview "The History of Donuts", there may be a spoken-word element to the forthcoming work.
