release date: 01.01.1999
genre: Pop
label: Avex Trax

lyrics: Ayumi Hamasaki

A Song for ×× was Ayumi Hamasaki’s debut album on a major label. Though the official release date was January 1, 1999, the album was sold in the record stores since mid-December. To the critics’ surprise, the album debuted at the top position of the Oricon Charts and topped the chart for five weeks, a remarkable feat for a debut album. The album debuted at #1 with more than 548,210 copies sold. This was mainly due to the fact that “A Song for ××” debut sales was the first and second week sales combined (Oricon only has 51 weeks instead of 52). The album stayed on the charts for 63 weeks and eventually went on to sell a more than a million copies. As of 2008, A Song for ×× is the 139th best selling album of all time.
* Total Sales : 1,451,910 (Japan)
* Total Sales : 2,000,000 (Asia)

Please realize that the correct name for this album as well as the song it was named for is ‘A Song for ××’. Note that ×× is not the same as xx or XX, these are multiplication symbols meant to be read as ‘the times’. Now as the title is read, it is ‘A Song for the times’.

    She should have resung this album sometime. Preferaly in 2003. Her voice would have suited it perfectly, just like a song for xx on A BALLADS.

    vv well, I don't know if they're the most famous or not, but people generally like them way more than this masterpiece.

    definitely my favourite. compared to her later work, "A Song for XX" seems to be so innocent and you can hear that these are her first steps in the business. and it's from 1999, which makes is even more precious. the Japanese really made some good music in the 90's

    v I serously don't think GUILTY and MY STORY are her most famous albums. Especially not GUILTY.

    WHAT THE HECK was she thinking when she released this one? all the tracks, except 'a song for xx' and 'depend on you' sound so childish, naive, boring, like she wanted to play it safe, without taking risks... if she hasn't released this album, i could say her career must have been untouchable!
