Biography

Tokyo, Japan (2004 – 2012)

Tokyo Jihen (東京事変) or the ‘Tokyo Incidents’ was a Japanese band formed and fronted by the popular rock singer 椎名林檎 (Ringo Shiina). As hinted by its name, the band has a running theme modeled on ’60s Japanese pulp fiction. The band debuted in September 2004 with the song 群青日和. Since their inception, Tokyo Jihen has released five studio albums, of which three peaked at number 1 on the Oricon charts.

Shiina had always wished to work with a band, and selected its members while working on her third solo album, 加爾基 精液 栗ノ花. The band, comprised of guitarist ヒラマミキオ (Mikio Hirama), Pe’Z keyboardist H ZETT M, drummer 畑利樹 (Toshiki Hata), and music producer 亀田誠治 (Seiji Kameda) as bassist, was first introduced as Tokyo Jihen during Shiina’s Sugoroku Ecstasy tour. Being part of a band allowed Shiina to both share the songwriting process as well as tone down her public image.

In July 2005, H ZETT M and Hirama left the band. H ZETT M returned to his duties as pianist for PE’Z and Hirama returned to his solo career. Two months later, あっぱ pianist and vocalist 伊澤一葉 (Ichiyo Izawa) and 浮雲 (Ukigumo) joined Tokyo Jihen as the replacement keyboardist and guitarist, respectively.

On January 11th 2012 Shiina Ringo announced the band’s breakup on their official website.

I actually miss the Jihen now that they are gone :( Variety & most of Color Bars notwithstanding they did put some good tunes out in retrospect. Handsome Sugite is top drawer.

They were doing that kind of style in the beginning of phase 2 (check out JUST CAN'T HELP IT.), but yeah, that sounds pretty pretentious.

With the return of solo Ringo, will this band finally get the chance to be missed? Only time will tell.

Those are my sentiments as well. I don't know why they chose to have Uki and others on vocals with the very last TJ tracks, it's not a very good depiction of the catalog they amassed together. Bon Voyage is more listenable than the other two non-Ringo tracks on Color Bars, though that isn't saying much, since those took quite a bit of time for me to digest and enjoy.

Not that bad just a letdown for anyone expecting a surprise hit or at least Ringo on vocals

Apart from the audio, only 1 picture can be found in the USB. Yes, ONE. What's the point of buying it if I can watch the making of Senko Shoujo new clip and more pics on Ringohan?

Ugh, Bon Voyage would have been so much better with Ringo on vocals. Oh well. I guess that's that then, until the inevitable reunion :P

I'm mostly new to Tokyo Jihen and I can't say that any of their songs or albums are bad. Seriously. This is the first time I like everything about a band.

Is it fair to assume it's a leftover from the Color Bars session? The production certainly matches that particular album.

Being a Petrolz fan, I don't mind it. But imagine hearing Ringo's sultry vocals sing harmony on this track. This song is begging for a duet.
