The Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra (東京シティ・フィルハーモニック管弦楽団) is known have the longest history in orchestra in Japan, originally established in 1911 in Nagoya. After moving to Tokyo in 1938, the orchestra played under Chief conductor Manfred Gurlitt brining opera to the Japanese public. The orchestra, now consisting of 166 members, regularly plays at the Suntory and Orchard Halls, and the Tokyo Opera City. The orchestra has recieved various awards such as the Ongaku No Tomo Sha Prize (1984), the Agency for Cultural Affairs Art Festival Prize(1986) and Art Festival Grand Prize (1995).

They’re best known for their Orchestral Game Concert series was played in Tokyo, Japan from 1991 to 1996. Some conductors included Koichi Sugiyama, Yoko Kanno, Kousuke Onozaki, and various other popular conductors in Japan. Playing mostly music from older game series of NES, SNES and Gameboy, the orchestra has created five full length albums. One of the main conductors seen in all five of the concerts is Koichi Sugiyama (すぎやまこういち) born April 11, 1931, who is also a composer best known for composing the music for the Dragon Quest game series and several TV shows in Japan, Space Runaway Ideon, Cyborg 009 and Gatchaman.
