Yinchuan, Ningxia, China (1995 – present)
布衣 (Bùyī) is a Beijing-based folk-rock band with roots in Ningxia. They first got together in 1995 in Yinchuan, Ningxia, China. Their music combines elements of folk music from around China with rock, and often features 古箏 (guzheng) in addition to electric and acoustic guitars. They are often billed as Buyi or Buyi Band.
In more than ten years of playing, the band’s personnel has changed a few times. Lead vocalist and guitarist Wu Ningyue (吴宁越) and Zhang Wei (张巍) on guitar, guzheng, and vocals are the core of the band, and have been known to perform as a duo. Currently, the other members are Xiao Niu (小牛) on bass and Wu Rui (武锐) on drums.
As of mid-2009, the band has released three albums: the self-titled debut in 2004, containing various live and demo recordings; 那么久 (Name jiu) and the live album 喝不完的酒 (Hebuwande jiu) both in 2008. They have played many festivals and also contributed music to film soundtracks.
