Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan (1999 – present)

Eiko Shimamiya (島みやえい子, formerly known as 島宮えい子; also known as EIKO and PEKO), born April 20, is a female composer and performing mostly electronic music in a style close to or , though her works also include trance, new age, electro-rock and folk music. She was born in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan, and now resides in Chitose. She has been a member of the production team I’ve Sound since their debut album in 1999, though she just released her first solo single in 2006. She is known for singing both opening themes of the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and the opening and ending themes for the live-action movie of the same name. She announced on May 10, 2010 via Twitter that she has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Her “Perfect World Live Tour”, which was scheduled to begin in June, has subsequently been canceled. She made an announcement of her full recovery from cancer on January 28, 2011.

Eiko also handles a music school called Shimamiya Size (S-size) in Sapporo.

    I agree with both sora_no_kioku and zipplet. I found her through Higurashi and, when I heard her voice, I thought it was stunning and different from the normal j-pop singers. So I searched a few songs and got really hooked in her style. I love her dark songs, as well as those that seem to take you to a different world, like "Mosquito" and "Uchuu no Hana". She is one of my favorite artists. :)

    sora_no_kioku: I agree completely. I also found Eiko through anime at first, and decided to try out some of her solo albums. I was very surprised. I find Eiko's music perfect if I want to chill out and fancy something a little bit different. My favourite albums of hers so far are 'O' and 'Hikari Nadeshiko'.

    Eiko is so talented and underrated. It's very sad that most people only know her because of anime. I mean, just look at the tags. Yet, her works are so far from typical anime songs, more oniric and dreamy, also darker. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy anime too and the Higurashi series is actually one of my favorites. But she deserves to be known outside of this as well, there are so many people who'd probably enjoy her music if they only knew about her. It's so emotional and creative in wonderful ways, especially the O album, a masterpiece!
