Biography

Kawasaki, Tokyo, Japan (1941 – 1985)

Kyu Sakamoto, born Hisashi Oshima - December 10, 1941 - August 12, 1985 - was a popular Japanese singer and actor. He was born in Kawasaki, Kanagawa prefecture as the youngest among 9 siblings and his parents; Hiroshi Sakamoto and Iku Sakamoto. His most popular song, Ue O Muite Aruko (“Looking up while walking”) known as Sukiyaki in the US, was a hit in Japan and topped the Billboard pop charts in the United States in 1963 — to date the first and only song sung entirely in Japanese to do so.

In 1985, Sakamoto was killed in the crash of Japan Airlines Flight 123. Before the doomed aircraft hit the ground, he managed to write a farewell note to his wife Yukiko Kashiwagi. Married in 1971, they had two daughters, Hanako and Maiko.

One of my all-time favorites is his recording of "Sukiyaki" which was a SMASHING HIT among the 'baby boomer' generation of the 60s & 70s. Thanks to the internet we still have the anytime ability to listen to his music which endures forever. I did some research & the lyrics are online which have been translated into English from the original Japanese. Yes the song is about the memories of a lost love. See more at www.findagrave.com <click on Famous Grave Search. Also more information at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyu_Sakamoto which includes a detailed Biography. God bless~!

Sukyllaky. This song I was heard first from a friend of my mother, he is the son of Japanese immigrants. This song is like a hymn in Japan. Really beautiful. Here in Peru, in the Japanese community and those close to it, really loved this song. <3

I'm not sure where I initially heard 上を向いて歩こう, (坂本九 had been dead for 4 years before I was born) but for as long as I remember I've been trying to find a CD with it on it. I've actually heard it once or twice on the local radio stations... Easily one of my favorite tracks of all time.
