Since 1974, he has been learning Yue Qin from Master Feng Shaoxian. In 1978, Liu Xing was admitted into the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and studied music theory/composition of World/Folk Music. He failed the music theory exams in the first year and that was perhaps one of his darkest years before he’s well-known as the Master of Zhong Ruan today. He didn’t give up on music and switched to major in Yue Qin (a four-stringed musical instrument). In 1982, He graduated with a major of Yue Qin Performance and then worked in the Opera of Hei Long Jiang. In 1985, He worked in China National Oriental Song & Dance Ensemble. Since then, he has been continuing his journey of freelance music composer and performer. He has been composing music for many symphonies suites (especially for Zhong Ruan), folk, new age albums…etc.
“Gu Fang Zi Shang” is probably one of his most famous works. The name of this song means a solitary flower in love with its own fragrance. It also means to indulge in self-admiration. This song somehow expresses the feeling of an artist who is proud and insolent of one’s own talent, and contemptuous of the world in some way, an interesting music to listen to.
“Nothing to do” and “My way” are among two of his most famous works too, not only because of the music but also the meaning of these titles which show how true the person is, how unruly the composer is, and he has his way. Yes, that is Liu Xing.
