Band leader Liang Long founded his first band in 1997 in Harbin, a city in the north-east of China. Second Hand Rose was founded three years later, this time Beijing, where Long decided to bring the spirit of traditional music of his native province of Heilongjiang.
The witty and often derisive lyrics combined with Long’s outfit (the frontman dresses as a woman and uses a lot of make-up during the concerts, much in the style of traditional chinese opera) and the band’s variety of music styles brought Second Hand Rose to popularity. As of 2006, there are two albums out, the band participated in several music festivals: China-Japan Pop Music Exchange Concerts (2003), Midi Music Festival (2006). The band played with Cui Jian, a prominent figure of Chinese rock, during one of their concerts.
