Morning Musume. is a Japanese all female j-pop group and the core group under the more expansive Hello! Project (H!P for short). Formed in 1997 when the producer of the band, Tsunku, challenged the 5 runner-ups of a TV competition, where they competed to become the lead singer of Sharan Q, to sell 50,000 copies of their demo single “Ai no Tane” in 5 days. They were successful and the reward was to be fully produced as their own act by producer Tsunku.

In a year, their popularity had surpassed the winner of the original competition (Michiyo Heike); in three they had surpassed the popularity of Sharan Q, who had broken up to become full time producers. The reach of MM and H!P extends to music, TV, radio, film, modeling, commercials, their own PS2 and GBA games, as well as their own indoor futsal and kickball, though their popularity has been waning in recent years. They also quickly became, and still remain one of Japan’s top all girl groups with a number of hit records and albums. They have sold over 16,379,822 copies in Japan only.

The members of Morning Musume change often. Every year or two, auditions were held to add new members. The last audition held for the group were in 2006. Morning Musume’s current lineup has 9 members, none of which are the original five or the three generations that followed. The current lineup has lasted the longest without any graduations or additions (June 1st, 2007 - present). Takahashi Ai is the current leader of Morning Musume and Hello!Project and Niigaki Risa is the sub-leader.

Some fans are just gonna hate anything that's not the old Momusu. They can't stand something different. They just want to complain. I truly enjoy every single and album Momusu has made. However, Mikan is not my favorite. It was my least favorite single of theirs from 2007, but it was still a great song. Just not as good as their previous recent singles. Some fans may have been disappointed. I dunno. I think Momusu has some weird fans, but most of us are dedicated to them. I know I'll never lose faith in them and they will always be my favorite group!

I think girl pop is starting to become more and more popular again. AKB48's latest single sold 87k in its first day of sale. So there is a market for that. I think the problem with Momusu is that the casual listeners in the mainstream market have a bias toward Momusu. Some people just aren't gonna like Momusu no matter what they do. I think if KP was done by AKB48 it would sell180-200k. For one reason. AKB48 is promoted well. They have multiple tv shows, make tons of appearances on varietys, etc. If UFA had the exact kind of marketing that would certainly boost sales up. Of course the Japanese music scene is a tough market. I think Momusu has done well to have last this long. AKB48 will be in the same boat that Momusu is now in soon enough. They will have their peak and they will slowly begin to lose sales and go back to where they were. I wonder how the sales promotion will be for their 50th single?

I think the NR promotion was a one time thing since it was the 40th single they went all out. KP comes out which is a song that NEEDS promotion, and they don't really give enough. Radio shows on at midnight aren't good promotion or really promotion at all, considering the people listening would probably already buy the single. I don't know how much their PVs are shown in Japan anyway..and probably not as much as artists like Arashi & Koda. I think if this song was released 6 years ago it would have sold really well. Now the market is clearly different and they don't want off the wall old stype H!P stuff anymore..they want mature Momusu.
