Biography

Ibaraki, Japan (1997 – present)

ムック (MUCC) is a band formed in Ibaraki, Japan in 1997. The band has four members: 逹瑯 (Tatsurou Iwakami, vocals), ミヤ (Masaaki Yaguchi, guitar), YUKKE (Yusuke Fukuno, bass) and SATOち (Satochi Takayasu, drums). In 1997, ex-member Hiro was the bassist, replaced by YUKKE in 1999.

The band’s name, decided upon by guitarist ミヤ, was originally the name of a character from the Japanese children’s program “Ponkickies.” The band is also known as “six-nine” from a play on words, since six-nine can be pronounced “muku” (六九) in Japanese. June 9th (6/9) is also known as “MUCC day” by their fans.

In 2000 the band had their first interview in the monthly publication FOOL’S MATE, issue 221. TATTOO (on vocals) changed his name to Tatsurou and the band’s name MUCC was changed to ムック (pronounced MUKKU). On 6/9 (“MUCC day”) they released their first CD single “娼婦/廃” (Shoufu/Hai) and a second press of their album “アンティーク” (Antiiku).

They went on their first tour in Europe in 2005 after they had been signed by the French label Soundlicious, which released their full albums. They mainly performed in France and Germany. In 2006 they were contacted by the German label GAN-SHIN and started a new tour in Germany. In August of 2006 they performed at Ram’s Head Live for Otakon, their first United States performance. Their biggest European tour was in spring 2007 when they released their album “極彩” (Gokusai). They visited the United Kingdom, Sweden, Finland, France, Switzerland and Germany. Their concerts in Germany were a coupled tour with the band Balzac. In May they performed in the United States for the second time during the J-rock Revolution Festival.

@anjelier69: "so i wouldn't be surprised if there was no interest by the venue owners to invite them... " it's not like the venues are "booking" them. in europe, i guess, it depends on the sales primarily. they released shangrila as a physical copy (which is quite rare nowadays...) and maybe they didn't sell "enough" (which COULD mean there's less interest in mucc or just in that cd) or maybe mucc themselves didn't have any interest or just too good offers for concerts in japan or or or....

Well for me, the visual aspect of it is pretty much pointless, but the scene had some genius musicians, as far as MUCC goes, idk why they are still pursuing VK, now more than ever it seems, since they have never been really visual kei to begin with, I would really like it if they were just a normal band sometimes, their music is too good and broad for visual kei imo

I believe I read Tatsurou talking about this problem once. How when they were young there were the big bands and they'd always dream of taking their places, but now that they're big there doesn't seem to be young bands that dream of taking Mucc's place. Last year or something.

that's the problem, I don't think visual kei really matches the times we are currently living, so it feels kind of outdated... it's just like looking back on glam metal bands. Japan's music scene would need something fitting for these days to show up. Or else... visual kei is going real underground for a long time

for some reason I don't think that's gonna happen, maybe Visual kei has run it's course, and that's all there is to it, it will have mediocre success and that's all, I don't think there will be a big break or that a new band that will blow everyone's minds will appear, it's sad, but we all saw it coming...

Depends. I've been enjoying japan's indie rock and indie pop scene a lot, like I always did, I guess. But the usual "jay rawk" audience on the west has really been disappearing... not surprising, considering how most of this audience got into the genre... And the visual kei scene is really going through another of those "times". Kinda reminds me of early 2000s... we need new bands with new people to do something new and innovative. Something that escapes the whole metalcore with electronic stuff thing every vk band is doing right now.

I don't think there's anything wrong with kpop, I think it has more to do with the fact that the japanese rock scene is making less and less quality music, and there's no innovation, anymore, apart from a few bands

Yes now the Visual kei and JRock are dying i'm agree with this,it's really frustrating for the people who can't go to Japan to see their favorites bands. Now i think that we are living the age of the K-Pop lives tours U_U

that's crap, but atleast they're making new music very soon, we won't have to wait more that one year for a single like last time, so that's good, and tbh, visual kei is dying, jrock too, so i wouldn't be surprised if there was no interest by the venue owners to invite them...

yeah, now that i think about it, they never fully explored any genre, Karma was a good foundation, but they went the other way after Arcadia...

I don't know. More Shuuchaku would be great. I'd love if they went full dance, despite the hate people around here would give. The only actual dance track on Shangrila was Arcadia, I wanted more stuff like Negativedancer and whatever

I wonder what direction they will be going in next, I personally would like some alternative rock, or even getting in some folk sounds like in shuuchaku no kane, but it's definately not going to be in a style similar to Shangri-la since it did unexpectedly bad...

judging by this tweet from Tatsuro "Concert was fun♪ I wanted to point the mic at the crowd and have everyone sing during the last chorus of our new song ƪ(΄◞ิ۝◟ิ‵)ʃ " it seems like they already have some new material
