Japan (1987 – 1988)

おニャン子クラブ (Onyanko Club) members 生稲晃子 (Ikuina Akiko), 工藤静香 (Kudo Shizuka), and 斉藤満喜子 (Saito Makiko) left the fold to form the very successful うしろ髪ひかれ隊 (Ushirogami Hikaretai) in 1987. They quickly built their own loyal following with hits such as あなたを知りたい (Anata wo Shiritai), and ほらね、春が来た (Hora ne! Haru ga Kita).

Over the course of the group’s career, they released five singles, three albums, two videos, and one photobook. They split up in 1988 and the girls went their separate ways. Shizuka later went on to become one of the most popular idols in Japanese pop music history.

In October 2008, its producer 秋元康 (Yasushi Akimoto) announces its re-formation as 渡り廊下走り隊 (Watarirouka Hashiritai) with four members from his new production AKB48, modern successor of おニャン子クラブ under the same label Pony Canyon.
