Faroe Islands (1998 – present)

ᛏᛣᚱ (sometimes written as Týr) is a band from Faroe Islands. Their music can be described as ///. They incorporate many elements and melodies in their songs. But the thing that makes ᛏᛣᚱ stand out is their incorporation of the island’s native structure. Their songs include many rhythm changes and complex time signatures instead of playing easier, linear melodies.

The project began in January 1998. Heri Joensen met his old bandmate, Kári Streymoy, at a party in Copenhagen, Denmark. Joensen suggested to Streymoy that they should meet up and jam. Streymoy initially declined, but later took him up on his offer.

They were soon joined by another former bandmate, bassplayer Gunnar H. Thomsen, making the duo a trio.

Singer Pól Arni Holm and guitarist Jón Joensen (Heri Joensen’s brother) were part of the band while they recorded How Far to Asgaard but left soon after its release.

Terji Skibenæs joined after Jón Joensen had left the band. Allan Streymoy (Kári Streymoy’s brother) took over singing duties for a brief time during which they released the single “Ólavur Riddararós”. After Allan left Heri Joensen took over the vocals. It was this line up which recorded Eric the Red.

Skibenæs left the band for while after the release of Eric the Red. The band played as a trio for some time.

    How annoying. About half of their songs are redirecting here, but not all. I agree that ᛏᛣᚱ is the proper display (though I can't see it on Vista), but having my plays split between this and Týr is just a pain... They really ought to merge the two, make it one or the other.

    oh and uzi, classic linux user I have to say. classic snobbish linux user there. you can always tell people people say linux, as opposed to their distro. if they said ubuntu, or suse, or (heaven forbid) gentoo, then they just wouldn't sound as nerdy and awkward, would they.

    Hmm, is it possible to display the runes in the default font of Vista? Installing JUnicode doesn't work. Maybe... appending JUnicode to the default Vista font or something..?
