  • Weird Al Yankovic - Santa Cruz - November 4th, 2011

    11 Nov 2011, 22:28 by jukkakhan

    Artist: "Weird Al" Yankovic
    Date: November 4th, 2011
    Location: Santa Cruz
    Venue: Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium
    Tour: The Alpocalypse Tour

    Remarks:

With San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland not to far from here, it's not too often that Santa Cruz gets huge artists to perform here. Jimmy Eats World was here not too long ago. The Pixies stopped by this month. Does Snoop Dog count as well? Regardless, in between shows at bigger cities, Weird Al delivered his quirky sense of humor, his silly stage antics, and a set of talented musicians right to our door step. As far as I know, this has been the first time he's been here; possibly due to this being his keyboardist, Ruben Valtierra's old stomping grounds at UCSC. Weird Al made sure we knew of this several times during the show, even allowing Ruben a solo spot and a chance to choose the next song; both times he opted to have Jon Schwartz perform a dazzling drum solo (a snare roll the first time, then a snare roll and a cymbal crash the second time).

Sun 19 Aug – Weird Al
Then Sunday we went to "Weird Al" Yankovic in Waukegan. Which was a good time as well. It was kind of odd being at a concert where you sat. And the loads of small children there. Show was great though. Did a lot off of the newest album, but, he did this whole little thing where they meshed together loads of his songs. Which was very nice. Very nice indeed. I have video of Polkarama here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uclMhpy48IM

    Tracks I remember:
    White And Nerdy
    Polkarama!
    Smells Like Nirvana
    Canadian Idiot
    Albuquerque
    Fat
    You're Pitiful
    The Saga Begins
    Amish Paradise
And that melody that included so many greats, like Eat It, and Pretty Fly for a Rabbi.

Sun 27 May – "Weird Al" Yankovic

I have never, ever enjoyed a concert as much as this one. The Blonde and I missed our chance to see "Weird Al" Yankovic in October '00 because her ob/gyn suggested that extremely loud noise might be harmful (have I mentioned we have a six-year-old? Do The Math!).

So this time, there was no way we'd miss, even though it's over an hour's drive away at something over $3.00/gallon. For the ride there, I selected Running With Scissors, which turned out to be eerily prescient, as he played more tracks from that album than from any but Straight Outta Lynwood. The venue was the outdoor amphitheater at Cypress Gardens Adventure Park in Winter Haven, FL, free with admission to the park; reserved seats were extra (of course I paid).

Not surprisingly, the audience was pretty White & Nerdy, including yours truly (as you can see from my current avatar). Rule One: Know Your Audience! Al has this one down pat.

  • Weird Al proves that laughter is the best medicine

    [event=177975]Sat 1 Jun – "Weird Al" Yankovic[/event]

Saturday night saw Toronto's Concert Hall filled to the capacity with a very mixed age crowd. Parents and children alike waited for the spectacle that is "Weird Al" Yankovic. Known for his witty parodies and off beat humor, the first date of his Canadian Bad Hair Day Tour proved to be a rousing success.

Starting the evening was the instrumental Fun Zone, better known as the Theme to Stanley Spadowski's Fun House, from the 1989 movie UHF. A video screen, which was utilized extensively throughout the evening, descended from the ceiling and broadcast a variety of talk show hosts introducing "Weird Al." Al promptly broke into the acapella Since You've Been Gone then, joined by the full band, his version of The Presidents of the United States' Lump he fancifully retitled Gump - yes, after the Tom Hanks film.

Interspersed between songs was the obligatory crowd talk where Al quipped how he was glad to be back in his hometown of Toronto (he's actually from California)…
