  • Priceless

Sun 27 May – "Weird Al" Yankovic

I have never, ever enjoyed a concert as much as this one. The Blonde and I missed our chance to see "Weird Al" Yankovic in October '00 because her ob/gyn suggested that extremely loud noise might be harmful (have I mentioned we have a six-year-old? Do The Math!).

So this time, there was no way we'd miss, even though it's over an hour's drive away at something over $3.00/gallon. For the ride there, I selected Running With Scissors, which turned out to be eerily prescient, as he played more tracks from that album than from any but Straight Outta Lynwood. The venue was the outdoor amphitheater at Cypress Gardens Adventure Park in Winter Haven, FL, free with admission to the park; reserved seats were extra (of course I paid).

Not surprisingly, the audience was pretty White & Nerdy, including yours truly (as you can see from my current avatar). Rule One: Know Your Audience! Al has this one down pat.

  • TOTW: The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy

    4 Dec 2006, 19:01 by me_cotterill

Another regular feature? Well, let's see how long this one lasts.

The idea is each week I pick a track that I really like and can't stop playing. Then I usually never listen to it again until it pops up in my 'Forgotten Favourites' playlist (songs played 4 times or more, but not played at all in the last 3 months) and I remember how good it was all over again.

Television, The Drug Of The Nation

Someone on the radio mentioned the name of someone who was going to be a guest on his show and then mentioned he used to be in 'The Disposable Heroes of 'Hipocracy' '. I immediately thought of this track and looked it up.

It was an odd little one-hit-wonder over here in the UK and it was one of those singles that sticks out like an inflamed opposable digit in the UK charts.

It's kinda a rap record, and yet not. It reminds me of the Dream Warriors or maybe even a friendlier version of Public Enemy, but what I really like is the 'message'. …

  • LYRICS?

    11 Aug 2006, 22:25 by Monban

Most people who know me know that I listen to songs solely for the music, and care little for the lyrics. Of course, there are occasionally songs that will catch my attention lyrically, and here are a few of my favourites:

Soak Up The Sun-lyrics- Carefree!Real World-lyrics- My theme song.Tegami-translated lyrics- Is is weird that I would want this song played at my funeral? All I Really Want-lyrics- Some really amazing verbiage in this song.Universal Dance-lyrics- SO HAPPY.Saddest Song-lyrics- Interesting social commentary which is in line with my own (libertarian) views.Fourteen-lyrics- Social commentary, amusing. It's All About the Pentiums-lyrics- Hilarious, but mostly because the technical references are pretty accurate.Everything Is Alright-lyrics- It's up for interpretation, but I understand the lyrics to be about OCD, and take the message personally.
