Zum began in 1990 as a paper fanzine. In 1997, Zum released a CD compilation to accompany the zine. Zum Audio Vol 2 was a stand alone compilation in 1998.
In 1999 Zum ceased printing the magazine to concentrate on being a record label. In the interim, co-founders Yvonne and George Chen began music projects, the former in Xiu Xiu and Contrail, the latter in Boxleitner and later 7 Year Rabbit Cycle and Kit. Yvonne passed the reins on to George to focus on her thriving publishing house Little Otsu.
