Founded in 1976 by William Ackerman and his then-wife Anne Robinson, Windham Hill became the most influential and prominent independent record label during the 1980s and 1990s. They were well-known for their distinguishable high-quality records and sound, and became synonymous with a particular undefinable style of music that reached every home who wanted pleasant, if somewhat easy, sounding music. Being an independent label, the musicians became a family wrapped around each other, and many played together; some of the more prominent members of the label included Michael Hedges, George Winston, Jim Brickman, Darol Anger, Mike Marshall, Mark Isham and Shadowfax. Windham Hill is now a subsidiary imprint of the Sony BMG record conglomerate, after BMG bought the label first from Ackerman in 1992 then from Robinson in 1996.

The first 100 or so albums were brilliant. So much so that I created a website dedicated to the Windham Hill Discography that I call "Windhaming"
