Wieden+Kennedy Tokyo Lab (W+K Tokyo Lab or W+K東京Lab) is a music label offshoot of the advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy’s Tokyo office. Launched in 2003, its stated mission is to release hybrid artists from Japan, to collaborate and promote them locally, as well as to audiences internationally. The label also functions as a kind of artist collective of graphic designers, directors, illustrators, animators, and other artists who work together to create strong visual identities in collaboration with their musical acts. The label releases all their albums as a CD+DVD format, featuring their visual works on the same level of importance as the music. Currently, the label has put out a total of eight releases, by four Japanese artists: The hybrid audio-video virtuoso Takagi Masakatsu (Takagi Masakatsu), the energetic and performative breakbeats duo HIFANA, the catchy and meticulous Tokyo hip hop producer Dj Uppercut, and Japan’s most renowned beat-boxer, Afra.
