Seth Brown, publisher and editor of Status Magazine, started Status Recordings in 1998 based on one simple principle - to release records that he would want to hear. Indeed, the album that launched the Southern California label was the discography of grindcore cult heroes Surface - a band that Status both loved and looked up to. Since that first release, Status has maintained its commitment to challenging and groundbreaking music - without regard to geography or scene limitations - putting out CDs and vinyl by a diverse selection of bands (though still close kin). From the pummeling Las Vegas outfit Curl Up and Die to the targeted political folk of Homage to Catalonia, Status’ output has hovered just below the radar of fickle indie trends, allowing the label to stay true to music that is both inspiring and undeniably influential. Take Midwesterners the Casket Lottery for example; or how about Sharks Keep Moving - a band that may not be famous, but every punk and indie kid since has felt the reverberations of their work, whether they know it or not. Status is not a growing label, after all, that’s not their goal or intention. But Status Recordings continues to do what it does best - to introduce the world innovators, one record at a time. And they’re gonna stay true blue.
