Nitwit Records are an independant label, currently active in Antwerp, Belgium.
Nitwit first started out as an art project in 2000, at the graphic departement of a college in Antwerp. A small number of students met up to create all sorts of graphic work, as well as to write and illustrate the anarchistic booklet ‘Nitwit - The Career Magazine’.
The more and more students joined in, the more and more artists came together, both from the graphic as well from the local music scene. Later on in 2001, Nitwit organised rehearsal sessions, venues that mixed jamming parties with various styles of artwork. This way, Nitwit became more popular among fresh starting music groups from in and around Antwerp, enjoying collective jam sessions and recording all together.
So, the basis of Nitwit Records was born. At first, they were just there for the support of brand new bands, but after creating annual compilation albums (in late 2001), Nitwit supported a couple of bands even more, especially the musical collective The Demo Saou (In 2002), since one of its lead musicians Trent Collignon,was a good friend of Bavo (one of the original founders of Nitwit) and he arrived at the same college. Another reason this collective was supported more was that The Demo Saou was made up by four pretty underground bands, and the recording results of their collaborations formed the best jam venue so far.
But it wasn’t until 2004 that Nitwit became an official independent recordlabel.
