Mute Records is a British label formed in 1978 by Daniel Miller who created the imprint solely to release his own single PlayWarm Leatherette. Following an avalanche of demos that were sent to him upon the back of the single’s release, he agreed to release Fad Gadget records and the label was born proper.

The later releases by Depeche Mode, Yazoo and Erasure gave the label a sound financial footing and it now provides a home for a diverse roster of artists like Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Moby and Goldfrapp amongst many others.

In 2002, Mute essentially stopped being an independent and were bought by EMI however control was kept by Miller and the imprint still manages to prosper new underground talent like Polly Scattergood and Tiny Masters of Today.

The official website is www.mute.com.
