Mello-Crisp Records is the indendent recording label published by The Heavy Duty Press. The label was formed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1994 to host the wimp rock power trio Event Horizon. Over the course of ten years, a circle of friends, most of whom worked at Koppa’s Farwell Foods recored miles of improvisational jams while reinventing themselves under several band names, most of which remains unpublished. During the last two years of rocking and recording at Lunik (the recording studio built by Ken Koppa in the basement of the grocery store), Sylvania Lark recorded two eps and one full-length cd.

Today, founding member Mister Koppa lives and works in Driftless Wisconsin, where he maintains The Heavy Duty Press and continues to pokily publish more of the archived recordings from Lunik.

It is important to note that this band of musicians is first a group of friends and that everything Mello-Crisp is done with a smile, knowing full well that the recordings do not measure up to professional standards. What is golden, however, are the intangibles; the occasional serendipitous moments of musical genius. But given the skill levels of the musicians, we can probably attribute most of that to chance. Either way, a little research reveals that these are people who are trying very hard to be taken seriously, without being too serious about it.

Mello-Crisp Records is more art than it is music.
