A dark trance / fusion one man outfit from Auckland, New Zealand’s North Shore combining traditional music techniques with modern ones combined in strong melodies and rhythms. Krackatoa isn’t a live act but produce music to distribute freely online and have been releasing tracks regularly since 1998 and in that time, built up their own unique ambient sound.

Influences are varied and wander all directions within the Electronica spectrum, Jean Michel Jarre, Herbie Hancock, Spacehog, Apollo 440, Moody Blues, Jean Sibelius and Satie.

Monkies in the Temple released 2001, an atmospheric low key sounding album with dark haunting sound echoeing in the distance, orchestral instruments mixed with ambient electronica makes this a nice album to chill out and daydream to.

Sun Dripping down the Stainglass released 2004 is Krackatoa’s 3rd album with a strange mix of tracks moving away from pure electronica to warmer acoustic tones. Keeping the melodies simple but using just enough variation as not to become too repetitive, a recipe for relaxed emotion.

I like the idea of playlists. I am currently listening to the Krackatoa Full Playlist. The time has come is really quite captivating. i like how it slowly but surely builds. I did not expect to hear the crunchy rhythm guitar or the vinyl scratches. Nice textures and dynamics.
