Knitting Factory Records grew out of the thriving lower eastside avant-garde music scene nurtured by The KnittingFactory Club at it’s original Houston street location, and later at it’s current three-level location on Leonard Street in Tribeca.

Active from 1989 to 2003, Knitting Factory Records documented this unique local scene and grew with the acquisition of NY Producer, Kramer’s, legendary Shimmy Disc label. Knitting Factory Records also launched Knitting Factory Classics to document and preserve jazz classics.

In 2002 Knitting Factory Records acquired the Instinct Records Label Group, adopting the diverse catalogs of Instinct Records, Shadow Records, and Evolver Entertainment.
