J Records is an American record label, owned and operated by Sony BMG, and is distributed through the RCA Records Group. J was founded in 2000 by music industry veteran Clive Davis, after his ousting from Arista Records the same year, and initially operated as an independently managed company distributed through BMG. In 2001, the label hit paydirt with its inaugural release—Songs in A Minor, the multi-platinum debut album of Alicia Keys, which went on to sell over 10 million copies worldwide. The same year, the label had another success with the platinum-selling debut album by O-Town. Olivia Longott was the first artist to sign to J Records.

In 2002, BMG bought a majority stake in the label, effectively obtaining principal control of the company. The same year, J began functioning under the RCA Records Group—where Davis was appointed President and CEO. In August 2005, J’s operations were merged with Arista Records, although both labels continue to release their own product.
