The Fading Ways record label was started by Toronto artist Neil Leyton in 1996, originally as a business front for his art-glam band, The Conscience Pilate. The label grew to including other Toronto-area artists by 1998, signing their first distribution deal with Scratch in Vancouver in 2001. Expanding into Europe in 2004, the label was one of the first to embrace a more open approach to doing business in music, and started using Creative Commons licenses as a marketing tool. The FW Share EP series thus became the Fading Ways international street-teams’ main tool of promotion. A new Fading Ways label in Finland was created in 2006 by Mikko Jokela, and in January 2007 Fading Ways celebrated its 50th released title. A vibrant online shop (www.fadingwaysmusic.com/store) services the world with the label’s titles via mailorder, while Cowbell Digital and Finetunes DSP assure digital distribution. In 2008 the new international website www.fadingways.com was unveiled, and by the end of 2009 the label’s catalogue featured 66 released titles.
