Distraction Records November News: High Places this Sunday! The Retail Sectors…

11 Nov 2008, 22:08

Reet up! Two things you should know about this week.

Firstly, Thrill Jockey's High Places hit the Head of Steam in Newcastle this Sunday! Expect a unique and joyous union of world beat, dance music and underground pop drenched in twitchy psychedelic beat-heavy exotic polyrhythms, perhaps the perfect soundtrack for taking a nice Jacuzzi filled with Um Bongo, or something. It's all grand stuff anyway; why not check them out? Why not indeed? They're bloody tip top, and we're tickled pink to have ‘em here. Support comes from Newcastle's don of electronica Cathode (whose new Sparkle Plenty album has been getting repeated plays at the Distraction gaff, hopefully he'll have some on the night), and Nathalie Stern, who's appearance at the Distraction Weekender earlier this year was an highlight for many. Oh, and we have the delightful Summer Night Air Sound System behind the ones and twos, playing the platters the matter. So no excuses! Reserve your place with an advance ticket on ‘da list' now!

Need more convincing? Here's a video of High Places performing live at The Fader Sideshow last year:

The day after (November 17th, if you're keeping track) sees The Retail Sectors 8" square vinyl lathe 'March Of Incurable Workaholic' / 'Song About A Girl Who Killed Herself Yesterday' get a release! Kentaro Togawa's tracks about ironies of life and death are split into two tracks of lovely, dramatic instrumental post-rock on this one, and there's only 150 of these little belters, so be quick! All copies come with download codes for the 320kps mp3s and .FLAC files too! This release will be available in RPM, alt.vinyl and Beatdown in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, or online from our preferred retailers rather than the chain stores: Norman Records, Boomkat, CD Baby, Action Records, or Rhythm Online, and here's the video, courtesy of the uber-talented Tsuchiya Takafumi (download an .mp4 - compatible for ipods - of the video here):

The single is also available to but from the likes of itunes, Amazon, Napster. . . hey, hang on a sec? Paying for mp3s? Not on our watch, mister: here, here's both tracks, as mp3s, for absolutely nothing at all! Remember though, if you like what you hear, you might want to consider buying the vinyl; its kinda expensive, we know, but we're actually selling these little fellahs for a loss, and all pennies earned for this go towards future releases. (Incidentally, since we first started giving the mp3s away for free with the d_rradio release, we've sold a helluva got more records simply because getting the mp3s out there for nowt enables people who have not heard of our artists before to listen to them and buy the actual physical release if they like it that much. It's so simple, and it works, we don't understand why every label doesn't do it.)

Another event upcoming is Kania Tieffer on December 4th! France's otter-obsessed maiden has a penchant for weird and wonky bastardised r'und'b and electropop and you can catch her on December 4th at The End in Newcastle-upon-Tyne with pointlessly hostile idiot Dressed in Wires and (gulp!) Radgepackets. DJ Search Warrant brings tha' noise too! Word.

That's about it for now. Just to mention that we only have TWO copies left of Tears Of Abraham's 'Sacrificing The Text', SEVEN copies left of the d_rradio album, and THREE copies left of d_rradio remixed - they won't be repressed and it's first come, first served, so if you want a copy, now's the time to buy. One final thingummyjig, those of you looking for bargains, or even an early Xmas stocking filler for the ambient music fan in your life, can get the Summer Night Air CD for a measly TWO QUID from Juno Records. Bonzer.

Take it easy, see you Sunday at the Steamer?
