Founded in 1990 by DJ Gerald Belanger, DOVe was one of the first CD-only labels in the electronic community fusing experimental sounds with the future of dance music. They switched gears in 1994 and released vinyl in conjunction with Ninja Tune and confused everyone, but the releases hit the top of many DJ charts anyways.

Early on the label focused a lot on mashup culture, releasing tracks by John Oswald, Steinski & Mass Media, The Tape Beatles and Sucking Chest Wound. Many of the other titles were living somewhere between the dancefloor and the living room, with releases from Horizon 222 and Rapoon, while Din and Digital Poodle were aimed straight at the techno and industrial worlds.

The label pumped out 50 odd titles until it closed in 1996 and Belanger focused his attention on a music production company called nice+smooth ultramedia, which later became a label proper releasing a steady variety of electronic sounds.
