Prank Monkey Records was born on a summer’s evening in 2004 by two people with a shared love of the classic UK indie label and cheeky mash-ups. Having met at a bootleg DJ event the previous year, Nick Foster and Richie Brown decided to release the fruits of web project and tribute album ‘London Booted’ - a 19 track remix LP of The Clash’s ‘London Calling’.

To test the water the duo teamed up with in-house artist Pheugoo and released a very limited number of the ‘Cowboy Boots’ EP - a collection that pit urban artists such as Usher and 50 Cent over ridiculously country backings. The record flew off the shelfs after being named record of the week in Oxford Street’s HMV and the scene was set.

‘London Booted’ followed soon afterwards gaining radio play on London’s XFM radio station from both Eddy Temple-Morris and John Kennedy. This was followed by the sensational DJ Riko’s ‘Whistler’s Delight’. Having picked up the record in their local shops, BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and Rob Da Bank each played the record on their 1 Music Show while fellow R1 host Annie Mac played the flip ‘P-Funk is Playing at my House’ on her thursday night dance show. The record finished the year at number 15 in the last ever Festive 50 countdown after delighting audiences.

2005 brought releases from Lemon Lime and the bootleg-packed House of Infinite Zen, each picking up Radio 1 play including Soundhog’s cheeky mix of The Proclaimers and 2 Bad Mice which made the station’s drivetime slot.
