Crónica is very happy to present the new release in the Unlimited Series of editions, “Crossovers”, a compilation documenting a series of encounters that happened in 2011 during the “Active Crossover” project.

“Active Crossover” is a project initiated by Simon Whetham during a residency at the Polymer Factory Culturehouse, Tallinn, Estonia in 2009. During the residency he met and worked with many artists who were all working with sound and music in different and interesting ways, prompting him to exhibit the work he composed alongside work created by those he met and worked with throughout his time in Estonia and Latvia.

Performing at events a number of times during the residency became an integral part of the project, so when Whetham came to exhibit the works in the UK, each exhibition began and ended with a live performance event, drawing on a pool of diverse local artists and musicians. …

We are thrilled to present, in a coproduction between Crónica with Fundação de Serralves, the new release by Stephan Mathieu and David Maranha, “Strings”.

“Strings” documents the long awaited first encounter of David Maranha and Stephan Mathieu, taking place in the Tennis Court of the Parque de Serralves, in Porto, on a sun-drenched yet gusty late-afternoon in July 2011. Having discussed in advance which instruments, tuning and notes to use, the piece was accomplished as an improvisation on the violin, shruti-box and virginals, reflecting both players love for classic minimalism, but also their ability to transform this language and make it their own. The acoustic instruments were amplified through a quadrophonic system to captivating volume, that nevertheless allowed environmental sounds to permeate.

The complete 30 minutes performance of “Strings“ is now published in a limited and numbered edition of 300 single-sided 12” records…

Shibboleths is a title of an audio play and sound performance of Piotr Kurek presented at the Mimar Sinar University of Fine Arts in Istanbul and Nijmegen's Extrapool, curators of the Audiotoop series. Recordings were taken in December 2011 in Nijmegen, Netherlands.

Andrea Neumann, Ana Veloso, Diana Combo, Filipe Silva and João Martins met at a workshop organized by the Serralves contemporary art museum. Together, they explored the relationships between music and gestures, working at two levels: group improvisation and the awareness of the movements necessary for the production of sound and for daily communication. The process involved an analysis of movement during the musical and social performances, the selection of motions, their practice and representation in the context of a stage performance, in synchronization with the music composed during the workshop. This is a recording of one of their improvisation sessions, at the foyer of the Serralves auditorium.
