The Birdman Recording Group, Inc. was started by music industry veteran David Katznelson to be a home for independent record labels releasing quality music. The flagship label, Birdman Records, was founded while Katznelson was still an A&R Vice President at Warner Bros. Records, where he worked with The Flaming Lips, Mudhoney, The Texas Tornados, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Shane MacGowan, and The Boredoms. The label started putting out such records as the Skip Spence covers compilation MORE OAR (featuring Robert Plant, Beck, Greg Dulli, and others) as well as the second solo project by Red Hot Chili Pepper John Frusciante.

Katznelson departed from Warner Bros. in 2000 and saw an opportunity growing in the crumbling of the modern music industry. The major labels’ lack of artist development and the general lack of funding for independent labels left many artists and catalogs without a home. The Birdman Recording Group, Inc. was founded on the notion of working with the best of such artists and catalogs, creating labels that would best fit the particular genres that each artist represented. The labels under the Birdman Recording Group, Inc. umbrella include:

Birdman Records
: The original and still the biggest of the labels boasts a roster that includes: The Warlocks, The Rising Star Fife and Drum Band, The Modey Lemon, The Apes, The Cuts, The Gris Gris, Paula Frazer, Foetus, PFFR, Tom Recchion, and The Young Jazz Giants. Birdman Records focuses on underground garage, psych, blues and Jazz.
