Backwater Records was started by Steve Mann to release material by Bands/Artists from Ipswich and the surrounding area.
Having released three singles and an album in the 80’s with ‘Exit 13’ on independent labels and also tours of Germany and many London gigs, Steve wanted to use his knowledge to help local bands with a folky-country-psychedelic feel.
Backwater Mission statement:
“IMPOSSIBLE!.
Backwater has now been going for more than Fifteen years (with a slight break whilst the studio was set up).
All the bands/artists are from Ipswich and surrounding area and also the artwork /photography etc is all done by local people as well.
The label is very much a “cottage industry” with all the recording/mastering completed in the “attic studios” using 8-track and two track analogue equipment(with a recent acquisition of a digital 16-Track) which gives all the backwater releases a warmth which seems to be missing from so much of today’s “hyped” pop records.
