The Band is only The Band because of the contributions of all the members. Each member was an expert on his instrument(s) and they had the type of chemistry and connection that most musicians can only dream about.
@atom217 Completely agree with you. I wonder if Danko and Manuel lived long enough would they get the kind of love that Levon got in his later years? TBH, I prefer the songs sung by Danko and Manuel.
@BJBooth I think the Band touring in 2015 refers to former members of the 80s/90s version of the group.
I love Levon, but why does he seem to be the only one who gets all the love? Even on shoutboxes for songs sung by Danko and Manuel, people credit Levon Helm. I personally find Richard Manuel to be the center of The Band (the members mostly agreed with that), and he seems to get no love!
Kinda disturbing to see the Band is touring as of Nov 2015. 3 of the original members have died, so it's really Robbie Robertson backed by Garth. Funny thing Robbie didn't want any part of them when they were alive in the 90's. What's next...the Beatles on tour??
@LastOneStand Definitely. These guys were hugely influential in the development of roots rock. Nobody did it better, though, because all of them were/are incredible musicians and while a lot of roots rock comes off as the artist trying to sound like the real thing, the Band's music at its best has every bit as much atmosphere as the best blues, folk and country. Their first several albums, in addition to the stuff they did with Dylan, are of remarkably high quality.
Anybody who loves Levon's drumming should check out Neil Young's song, The Old Homestead. It's eight minutes of Levon feeling his way into every little feeling and intonation and nuance of Neil's mind as he moves the song along. Extraordinary work!
For my money - and I love everything about the Band - what stands out is Levon Helm's singing. He has so much soul, feeling and plain old love of making music. I think that love of making music is what shines through in everything the Band ever did
Exactly, Levon is and will always be an icon of popular music. The Band as a whole is/was one of the most influential acts of all-time. The tribute was nice but they could've explained who he was/is a bit. Also one of the few moments on the grammys that wasn't dedicated to selling a new product, as opposed to actual music.

Everyone who likes The Band should make sure to listen to Twilight over and over and over again. Both the 1975 outtake and the 1976 single version are amazing, so just find one and play. It's one of their best, which makes it one of the best songs ever made!
