Giu 6 2008, 2:05 di kikaiyasha1. How did you get into 29?
My mum and I heard the track Porcelain on one of those chill out jazz compilation CDs my Dad’s so fond of and both really liked it. So I decided to buy her the album it’s on as a surprise present which of course I ended up listening to and liking.
2. What was the first song you ever heard by 23?
Start Wearing Purple. Amy played it to me in her car, she said I’d like it as it was almost weird enough for me.
3. What’s your favourite lyric by 33?
God that’s hard as I love her primarily for her lyrics. Some of my favourites are:
Even molluscs have weddings,
Though solemn and leaden,
But you dirge for the dead,
And take no jam on your bread,
Just a supper of salt and a waltz through your empty bed
And, Emily, I saw you last night by the river.
I dreamed you were skipping little stones across the surface of the water
Frowning at the angle where they were lost, and slipped under forever,
Apr 5 2008, 0:09 di queeniefoxFor some reason I've managed not to see The Dylan Project yet, despite it until this most recent tour featuring two (EDIT: Three! Sorry Gerry!) members of Fairport Convention. (Simon Nicol is currently touring with The Albion Band so only Dave Pegg remains.) I haven't even consciously seen them at Cropredy Festival. (This is not excluding the possibility that they may have been on while I was a) asleep b) drunk c) hitting people with hats d) in a completely different field or e) hitting people with hats whilst being in a completely different field.) I have Steve Gibbons before though, at 2003's Cropredy where he sang a song during Fairport's set. He was probably on for ten minutes at the most but he definately made an impression on me judging by my LJ entry of the time where I said I'd rather have listened to him all night. (2003 was the year the guests were more memorable than the band all round really - this was also the first year I heard Chris While sing.)

Does it work? Surprisingly, I think that it mostly does. She's well supported by pianist Julian Joseph, Steve Smith on guitar, Matthew Barley on 'cello (also the arranger and producer), and a trio of percussionists. It's not easy to get hold of, for some reason, but well worth a try. I've been waiting some time for a follow up, so far without any luck.

There's enough here to make me want to hear the real thing -- but the traditional songs are swamped by layers of soft-pop; not just electric guitars and keyboards, but "loops" and "additional sonic treatment". In so far as "world music" means anything beyond marketing departments' chauvinistic desire to lump together inconveniently diverse genres into one homogeneous lump, it probably means this: the tendency to throw everything in together so that rich cultural traditions become just elements in the mix…
