Paul Bley was born in Montreal, Canada, and has been a long-time resident of the United States. His music characteristically features strong senses both of melodic voicing and space.
As well as being a distinctive and innovative musician himself, he has worked with a number of important musicians at key points.

  • possibly the only work battling Sun Ra in terms of synthesizer jazz alchemy is probably his Dual Unity album with Annette Peacock, what a masterpiece.
  • In relation to Chiaroscurist's comment, in the Lisbon 2009 concert he was even already sitting at the piano when they opened the doors and only stood up with difficulty a few times to thank applause. But his music wandered gracefully everywhere... :-)

  • The concert in Philly last year was tops... even though the old dude can barely walk. To quote the maestro during his warm-up: "I told you to get me a piano! This isn't a piano!" Evidently, the instrument provided for him was most unsatisfactory. ;-)
