  • Synopsis Week #3 (sans iPod) - 11/06/06/-18/06/06...

    Giu 22 2006, 8:10 di quimtessence

I'm confident enough that the current week's chart won't change; hence, I'm finally posting my synopsis.

[1]. (165) Fall Out Boy: This had to happen at least once in my time on Last.fm - that is, for them to have less than 200 plays a week. Tsk, tsk, tsk. I play them constantly on my iPod, therefore when I get home I usually feel like playing something else. Plus, I think my mum has some kind of radar that tells her I'm playing FOB (she doesn't know English), which usually means me dancing around my room because their songs are too damn danceable. That's why I stopped playing Dance, Dance at home a while ago. :P

[2]. (98) Boy Hits Car: Why yes, I am a bit obsessed. But only just a bit. Seriously, I play them on my iPod as well, and then play them so more at home. It's freaky. FOB's still doing it for me more, though.

[3]. (73) AFI: Hmm. They're still very high in my charts and I have yet to play all their albums. I'm mostly concentrating on Sing the Sorrow right now. …

  • Favourite 100 Albums - No Repeated Artists

    Giu 21 2006, 18:15 di pingpong_fiasco

Well, here's my attempt at following hickorywind, fettstabilt, ACKthehack, pattismithowns, and countless others.

Only one album per artist (but solo artists may have their own too, so the Flying Burrito Bros and Gram Parsons each have their own entry).

Apology in advance: I simply do not know enough about jazz and blues to list any artists, although I am mindful of my debts to Miles Davis, Monk, and Coltrane, not to mention Robert Johnson, Howlin' Wolf, and John Lee Hooker (whom I have really gotten into recently due to fettstabilt - thanks man!).

Also, there is no solo Lou Reed on this list. The older I have grown, the less interested I have become in his solo work (except Berlin).

    100.The Mollusc - Ween

    99.Country Gazette - World Standard

    98.Seamonsters - Wedding Present

    97.Soul Mining - The The

    96.Greatest Hits, vol. 1 - Roxy Music

    95.Rocket to Russia - Ramones

94.Metal Box - Public Image Limited

    2. What song makes you sad?
Anything by Led Zeppelin, simply because they're so shit.

    3. What is the most annoying song in the world?
'Fix You', by Coldplay. Arguably the worst song of all time?

Oasis. People dismiss them, but you all secretly fucking love them ~!

    5. Your newly discovered band is?
    The Pipettes, they're pretty sexy.

  • recent cd purchases (+ reviews)

    Giu 17 2006, 12:26 di mydaydream

I've bought a lot of CDs in the last couple of months, and now (mostly just to kill some time~) I'm going to write a mini-review/rant for each one. Hooray.

I worked out the other day that in the last two years, I've spent nearly 2000 bucks on CDs/music. That's a lot when you don't have a job. Eesh.

    ----------------

Fiona Apple -- When The Pawn...
I honestly didn't like Fiona Apple's debut, Tidal. It had some strong tracks ('Shadowboxer' and 'Never is a Promise') but it wasn't really consistent. When The Pawn... is a huge improvement. The songs just seem to work on this record, if that makes any sense. It's a lot more upbeat, the production is better and the songs are a lot more interesting. Oh, and I like the percussion. Especially in 'Fast As You Can'. (Yes, it's a random point to make.)

The Dresden Dolls -- Yes, Virginia...
Honestly, I haven't really been a fan of the Dolls for very long. A friend introduced me to their self titled album in December…
  • My 150 Favorite albums

    Giu 16 2006, 5:33 di hickorywind

Here is my list, inspired by pattismithowns and others. These are my favorite albums, and is not meant to be comprehensive of anything except what I enjoy listening to. A couple of the ground rules I used were: no albums released after 2001 (as I haven't had enough time to decide if a particular album has enough "staying power" to crack the list). Also, no live albums or compilations, though I did make a minor exception to the no compilation rule. The Beta Band and Lush both released a cd of their first three eps as their first "full length" release, both of which were allowed here.

Comments and other favorites are welcome and encouraged.

    150. Iggy Pop - The Idiot (1977)
    149. Pixies - Surfer Rosa (1988)
    148. Seam - The Problem With Me (1993
    147. Black Uhuru - Chill Out (1982)
    146. Luna - Penthouse (1995)

    143. The Field Mice - For Keeps (1991)
    142. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced? (1967)

  • What do you get when you think of the 90s?

    Giu 14 2006, 17:43 di kaffi_batteri

I know, it seems so Pitchforkish that it makes me ashamed of myself. Anyway, this is not for me. A friend of mine asked me to burn this album for him, telling me that I had to choose the songs from the albums on that fucking 90s list from Pitchfork. I actually found it pretty funny to have a chance to look for songs from many hip-hop artists and stuff (you know, I'm brazilian, and mostly hip-hop and rap songs never make it to here, because we can't understand english lyrics). Just wanted to ask if the songs are ok. If that were you to record it, would you consider changing any? I know I would skip some, and definitely include some others.

    001. Radiohead – Ok Computer (1997) – 05 – Let Down
    002. My Bloody Valentine – Loveless (1991) – 11 – Soon
    003. The Flaming Lips – The Soft Bulletin (1999) – 06 – What Is the Light?
    004. Neutral Milk Hotel – In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (1998) – 03 – In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
    005. Pavement – Slanted & Enchanted (1992) – 02 - Trigger Cut/Wounded Kite at: 1

Step 1: Put your iTunes or equivalent on random.
Step 2: Post the first line from the first 1530 songs that play, no matter how embarassing.
Step 3: BE AWESOME. (again, huh?)
Step 4: Strike out the songs when someone guesses correctly.
Step 5: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING!

I just have too much fun with this to stop. Oh, and I've included artist names, perhaps to make it a bit easier?

(If a song title is in the first few lines, it'll be replaced with and elipsis)

P.S. There are a few repeat artists.
