Every time I listen to this album, it gives me chills, it's so good.
I guess "Station to Station
" is mainly known as David Bowie
's coke album, as the habit he took on while recording "Young Americans
" totally overtook him. I know Bowie prefers calling this material plastic soul, but I don't know why. There is a soul in this music, but it's a frantic, tormented, frankly frightening soul. "Station to Station
" is often harrowing, at times desperate, even a bit morbid. But it is so, so excellent.
My favorite track from it is my favorite Bowie song altogether, "Stay
." It's my favorite anthem of longing. His lyrics are heart-rending, his vocals so vulnerable. It starts out with a mid-tempo guitar riff, but it keeps picking up, as though he's getting more and more anxious, barely keeping control. of Montreal
may have brought emo funk back, but Kevin Barnes
must have taken huge cues from this song.
